If Laynia had been a mind-reader, she’d have been deeply touched by the depth of Rogue’s thoughtfulness, her kindness and mindfulness towards others, the way she was both so compassionate and so clever in how she put that compassion into actual play, orchestrating a race instead of just talking. It was both angelic and cunning, the two traits combining into something truly impressive.

Well, no, if Laynia had been a mind-reader she wouldn’t have gone invading Rogue’s thoughts, but the point stood.

But of course, she wasn’t privy to Rogue’s actual machinations, so she didn’t know just how deliberately Rogue had done this for her. She just knew that this had been a fun idea, and indeed really freeing, and Rogue seemed like a VERY nice person she wanted to spend more time with for sure. And what a wise lookout on life too!

“There is none other I’d rather be with! You would know all the most fun things to do, I am sure of it!” Laynia had full confidence in this, even if Rogue probably hadn’t traveled that much more than Laynia did. She felt that the Southerner clearly just had an instinct for it; like the race idea! Oh she loved the notion already, she’d seen so many movies about American “girls trips”---

Oh. What a very good question.

Tiger dipped his head down into the grass to munch and while Laynia really shouldn’t let him—it was going to get all over the bit— but oh, he’d earned it for being so willing to cut loose for her! And while he misbehaved, she pondered.

She also noticed the MRD.

The blitheness of her body language seemed to seep away, replaced by a wary alertness, like an animal that realizes it’s being watched, but isn’t so alarmed as to bolt yet. She kept contemplating the question, but it wasn’t the only thing on her mind now.

“Well,” she began, patting Tiger’s bent-down neck,

“If I had to choose one place. . .it would be somewhere sunny, like a beach, but also very. . .historical, with lots of places to tour, like old buildings and art museums. . .it would probably be somewhere like Italy then, I think. It’s supposed to have this beautiful climate, and it has all those marble statues from the ancient world. . .what about you? Where would you go, if it was just to be one place in all the world.”

Her eyes darted in the direction of the MRD figures,

“And. . .should we be worried?”

Laynia. . .did not like them. No one at the mansion did, of course, but her own past experiences with being thrown in a camp made her extra cagey about a government-sent anti-mutant task force. She knew they were still on their grounds and not doing anything wrong, but. . .she’d also learned in Russia that this didn’t really matter for mutants.

 Character Daemons
Posted by: Guest - 08-24-2024, 12:03 AM - Forum: My Forum - Replies (1)

In the "His Dark Materials" series, everyone is born with a daemon. A daemon is an external representation of your soul in the form of an animal. So basically, whatever animal would best represent you as a person. They are typically (but not always) opposite-sex from their people, can speak (though they seem to exclusively speak with their person alone), and have personalities and names. Some names are very fancy and esoteric, like Pantalaimon and Ozymandias, some are more common or plain, like Hester and Ratter.

So basically. . .if your character had a daemon, what animal would they be and why? Bonus points for name inclusion too! And how about YOU and YOUR DAEMON?

Ok, so I haven't figured Wanda's out yet, and Catseye is just....obviously she's a cat of some type. She's her own daemon.

But as for Darkstar and Shaw---

So, my first choice for Sebastian Shaw's daemon is a black female ox named Opis. Oxen are associated with hard work, and he's a self-made man who prides himself on having been born dirt-poor and become a multibillionaire through sheer hard work, determination, and intellect (note, I write COMICS Sebastian Shaw, not the XMCU one who is a VERY different guy) Oxen are also noted for their incredible strength, and Shaw is a huge strong guy, as well as very strong in spirit. He never gives up, which unfortunately contributes to his villainy. Cattle are also often associated with anger; a charging bull is a terrifying thing, and Shaw very much resembles that during a fight. Basically, Shaw is a man who embodies both the good AND bad symbolism of the ox, so of course he has one as a daemon!

As for her name, Opis was a Roman earth goddess, the counterpart of Rhea (mother of Zeus). Her name is based on both the Latin word for wealth and riches as well as the word for work, so it’s hard to think of any better moniker than that for an animal that’s meant to be Shaw’s soul made flesh.

She's female because TYPICALLY daemons are opposite-sex from their people. Not always, though. It's stated very early in the books that sometimes people have a same-sex daemon, and Pullman, last I checked, has a very "draw your own conclusions" attitude towards it. Fan theories range from it indicating an LGBT identity to indicating some kind of second sight. Shaw is canonically bisexual, but he's also just very very masc, so I made his daemon female since like...if your average cishet guy has a female daemon, that's probably what Shaw has.

While a black ox is my own choice, quizzes have given me different results for him, and I also like them enough to mention. The official website for the BBC television series based on the HDM books has a quiz that gave Shaw a kingsnake when I took it for him, and describes a kingsnake daemon as indicating someone who is powerful and independent, who makes their own rules with their own ideas of what is right and wrong, and is ambitious, respected by others, and not to be crossed. I think that fits. Plus, kingsnakes bear a royal name, and they’re a notoriously cannibalistic species, preying on other snakes, which I think suits Shaw well in terms of being a treacherous ally and as selling out mutantkind for his own gain.

Another quiz gave him a wild cat, specifically a snow leopard. Interestingly, this is the daemon that Lord Asriel has, and Lord Asriel's first description is really not dissimiliar to Shaw!

"a tall man with powerful shoulders, a fierce dark face, and eyes that seemed to flash and glitter with savage laughter. It was a face to be dominated by, or to fight: never a face to patronize or pity. All his movements were large and perfectly balanced, like those of a wild animal, and when he appeared in a room like this, he seemed a wild animal held in a cage too small for it.”

His interactions with Lyra in the first chapter are dead-on Shaw too, lol

Anyway, here's the result copy-pasted, with the Shaw-accurate parts bolded:

"Your daemon would take the form of a wild cat! Those who have wild cat daemons are proud and confident people who radiate strength. They aren’t necessarily the most talkative, but they have the largest presence in the room wherever they go. As natural leaders, the companions of these individuals know it’s their way or the highway.

Your daemon would take the form of a snow leopard! You are an intuitive and self-reliant individual who maintains a balance in their life. More so than others with wild cat daemons, those with snow leopards are know for their independence and quiet wisdom. They are often socially removed, deeply internal and concerned with philosophy or big picture issues."

The first paragraph is dead-on Shaw, the second one less so but still with some bits!

Finally, I know they're a total meme at this point, but THE HONEY BADGER

I think Darkstar’s would be a wolf. I realize that’s such a cliche animal to pick for “what my character is most like” because of the coolness factor, but that’s not why I selected them. I actually picked them because wolves are very communal and, while they don’t run on that bullshit alpha/beta/omega system, are hierarchal, and very loyal. A lone wolf is NOT a happy animal. They work together, from bringing down prey to bringing up pups. They also thrive in cold environments.

Darkstar never goes solo once in her career, she seems to always need to be on a team, and she’s extremely loyal, sometimes too much so. It’s the canine loyalty in particular that made me pick wolves over any other communal animal, like horses or naked mole rats or apes or rats or any number of other critters. I almost went with a dog instead, servants are depicted as often having dogs of a breed that reflects their position (for instance, a high class butler having a fancy Irish setter, but a guard having a large guard/attack breed) but I ultimately went with wolves both because of her fighting capabilities as a superhero (even if she’s far from a notably vicious type) and because wolves don’t have the same urge to please human beings; even pet wolves won’t do tricks and shit like a dog will.

And Laynia is someone who does struggles a LOT with whether to remain loyal and obedient when her conscience telling her NO, and while daemons are reflections of their person, they also often embody like…our second thoughts, or things we ignore or repress, or our “true” selves, and many people are shown to bicker with their daemons because of this. Like Lyra is very impulsive, but her daemon Pan tries to talk her out of reckless behavior, or Mrs. Coulter has quashed down all her better human qualities and as a result her daemon barley speaks because he represents that aspect of her, there’s this bad guy who seems to be a very charming seducer, but he’s actually violent and evil and his daemon is a hyena that everyone innately finds repulsive (yeah, I hate the hyena slander, but you see my point) So I think her wolf daemon would be the independent-minded part of her that keeps saying “this is wrong, make your own decisions, you care about your pack but they don’t care about you!” while she herself argues with it because of her conditioning.

I like to headcanon Laynia as a closeted lesbian even though there's really no basis for it, and to that end her daemon is a female as well. She's a white wolf, and her name is Drioma after a Slavic spirit of the evening and the night.

And at last...me! I think I'd probably have a chinchilla or a dormouse. Chinchillas are delicate, and they're very sensitive, over-sensitive even. They're super duper picky and hard to win over, and tend to only bond with one person. I'm a lot like that. Dormice hibernate, hence their reputation as sleepy, and I need to nap all the time. They’re solitary and seldom travel more than 70 m from their nest; I’m such a homebody that quarantine didn't impact my social life at all besides the once-a-month LARP. While I seem more social online, I still pretty much only stick to the spaces that I know, and I still seldom am the first to reach out to others. Just as dormice stay in its nest to avoid predators, I tend to flee unfamiliar interaction out of nervousness it will go wrong. It also spends most of its life sleeping, which I do a lot of as well, and just like me, it will go into torpor if the climate is especially cold or wet. It’s nocturnal though, so when it is awake, it’s at night, which I think is my natural state. They eat a wide variety of food, much of it sweet like fruits, and are in fact omnivores, occasionally preying on things like aphids and caterpillars, and I likewise LOVE TO NOM, especially sweet things, and while I’ve had people often think I was vegetarian (as one would think the dormouse would be) I actually have to eat meat for medical reasons–we both do what we gotta!

That said, I took the quiz, and it said I'm a marsupial, specifically a wallaby, probably because they just didn’t have a potoroo option! If you don't know what a potoroo is, they're an endangered marsupial I am SUPER PASSIONATE ABOUT and an advocate for irl. But anyway, here's the quiz, which....basically yeah, me!

"Your daemon would take the form of a marsupial! Those who have marsupial daemons are protective and giving people who typically have an unusual or quirky perspective on life. They are creative individuals good at inspiring their loved ones, notably quiet until something riles them up.

Your daemon would take the form of a wallaby! You are an introverted and curious individual with a strong sense of self. More so than others with marsupial daemons, those with wallabies come across as friendly and sociable, but are slow to trust others and struggle with commitment. They are incredibly focused once something grabs their attention and tend to get tunnel vision when pursuing their goals or obsessing over their interests."

CALLED. ME. OUT!!!

Like many animals, and most predators, Catseye was nocturnal by nature. Getting her into anything resembling a standard human circadian rhythm had proved to be an even greater task than teaching her to speak, and she often fell back into her insomniac instincts after dark, especially if the day had not been a sufficiently tiring one.

Or if she heard something INTERESTING. Like, say, someone moving around downstairs.

Knowing that she was nearly invisible in the shadows, her purple fur appearing gray without sufficient light upon it, she stepped forward to give the smoothskin a better look. The poor pitiable things, their SIGHT was their BEST sense, and they couldn’t even see in the dark! Catseye felt pride in being most magnamious to have remembered this, let alone compensated for it on the poor smoothskin’s behalf.

But this wasn’t any smoothskin. It was her classmate, Noriko, aka Surge. . .or Bluefur Painlight, which was how Catseye addressed her. Bluefur naturally referring to Noriko’s bright sky-colored locks, and Painlight to her powers; they looked like light to Catseye, and hurt a lot to get hit with. A respectable foe!

“Catseye no like sleep sundown,” she explained, her high-pitched girl voice coming from the throat of her panther-like form.

“Sun’s up is best sleepytime, yes? Catseye like sun sleep. Night-down is when hunt romp crash play! Bluefur Painlight awake to play? Play with Catseye?”

In typically selfish feline fashion, Catseye seemed less concerned with whether Noriko was ok, and more with whether Noriko would be entertaining. Alternatively, it could simply be not that she didn't CARE about Noriko, but that she didn't understand that being up at night was a bad sign in other people because it was so normal for her. It was often hard to tell with Catseye about this kind of thing.

Basically, you go to TV TROPES and pick however many tropes you like (I'm doing 5 each, with some combined into one) that apply to your character, with a justification if you want.

CATSEYE
(1)Badass Adorable + Beware the Silly Ones + Cute Bruiser - Catseye is a pretty darn adorable character, her feline antics and sing-song speech are silly and endearing, and the fact her feline forms are pastel purple probably makes her seem less serious and less scary. . .but the fact is she still turns into a massive predator with talons, teeth, and a willlingness to use them that is uncomplicated by human morals.

(2) Hulk Speak - She has a distinct way of speaking with a sort of broken, sing-song syntax where she makes up her own words and refers to herself in the third person. This is not due to lacking intelligence---in fact, the reason she can speak at all is because she IS so intelligent---but her feral upbringing.

(3) Otherworldly Technicolor Hair - In her case, she's got pale purple hair and is "not quite human" in the sense she's a human mutant who can shapeshift into a variety of feline-based forms (also all purple)

(4) Cat Girl + Unusual Ears + Our Werebeasts Are Different + Panthera Awesome - Catseye is a polymorph whose forms range from completely human but with pointy ears, a near-human catgirl with the ears and tail, to a full-on hybrid werecat and giant panther.

(5) Innocently Insensitive - A common occurence due to her ignorance of human social norms and cultural taboos.

DARKSTAR

(1) Dark Is Not Evil + Bad Powers, Good People - Her abilities draw on dark energy from a dark dimension of darkness that is not just DARK but also physically cold, energy-sapping, and mentally-unsettling at the LEAST to those who are exposed to it. However, Darkstar herself is very much a good person, generally quite nice, typically level-headed and merciful, and an all-around white hat type.

(2) Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold - She has the aforementioned personality in combination with long blonde hair

(3) Chummy Commies - Despite the fact that she debuted as part of a Soviet team sent to capture Black Widow and return her to the motherland, Darkstar is portrayed from the start as a kind, moral person. This remains consistent regardless of which side she's currently on, and The Winter Guard/Soviet Super Soldiers more than once teamed up with America heroes against greater threats. Darkstar in particuliar is shown to regard said other heroes as friends even when they're not on the same side.

(4) Badass Family - Her twin brother Nikolai aka Vanguard is a mutant as well, and went through the same training regime as her, and they're often a Brother-Sister Team in combination with Ursa Major or a larger squad. Her long-lost father has powers as well, though not by birth; he gained them via radiation (at the unfortunate cost of his sanity)

(5) Long-Lost Relative - See the long-lost (evil) father; given that he winds up her Incest-ant Admirer it probably would have been better if they'd never found each other. Her brother Nikolai is also something of an odd version; they were raised together along with Ursa Major, but they were never told they were siblings, and Laynia was given a different last name. Presumably, this was to ensure that family ties wouldn't supersede their loyalty to the State.

SEBASTIAN SHAW

(1) Ambition is Evil + The Determinator: Shaw was born in extreme poverty, but his boundless ambition and belief in himself fueled his hard work, determination, and innovation. This allowed him to go from Rags to Riches and become a Self Made Man of which he is very justfiably proud. Unfortunately, he's also a Corrupt Corporate Executive who has forsaken his morals and humanity in order to gain more and more, to go further and further. Even though he's a billionaire and has accomplished more than he could ever need, the guy just can't stop. He always has to do more, be more, achieve more, have more, and it's what pushes him into villainy.

(2) Genius Bruiser + Cultured Badass - Shaw's powerset makes him a bruiser by design, which is augmented by his natural size and fitness regime. However, he's also a talented engineer and a business savant. In my depiction, he's also used the free time his wealth affords him to cultivate a refined palate for food, spirits, and fragrances, as well as a knowledge of history, literature, and higher culture not just as defined by the Western world but around the globe. He's a man who always seeks self-improvement, so I figure that fits for him, and it likewise fits his self-image as a gentleman. He also, when he chooses to use them, has an impeccable set of manners. Given that he's evil, this makes him A Man of Wealth & Taste who is Wicked Cultured.

(3) Workaholic - He's spent most of his life this way, which in part accounts for his success. He's learned to take some free time to himself in the present, but he still qualifies since, given his wealth, he doesn't even need to work at all to support himself but still chooses to do so.

(4) Villainous Widow's Peak - Less so at Damascus Road where he's played by the curly-topped-and-tousled Javier Bardem, but he sports quite a high one in the comics.

(5) The Lost Lenore - His late fiancee Lourdes meets all the criteria. I fuckin refuse to acknowledge Duggan's idiotic "oh actually she's alive and he was abusing her and---" bulltshit retcon, the fuck outta here with that shit.

Reservations expire at 11:59:59 PM the last day.<br><br>
<center><iframe src="https://free.timeanddate.com/clock/i9e9veva/fn8/fs15/fc777/tct/pct/pa10/tt0/tw1/tm1/td1/th2/ta1/tb1" frameborder="0" width="326" height="37" allowtransparency="true"></iframe>
</center></text>
<hr>[/doHTML]

CODE

Character Name/Codename — PlayerAlias — five days from today's date

[doHTML]
<hr>
<h2>Current Reserves</h2>
<text><center><smol>

<b>Tommy Shepherd</b> — <I>Ben</i> — 07/23<br>
<b>Jonothon Starsmore</b> — <i>AJ!</i> — 07/27<br>
<b>Paige Guthrie</b> — <i>Jules</i> — 07/28<br>
</smol></center></text>
</inner>
</div>[/doHTML]
